Dates, cost, registration and what to expect on conference day.
When and where is BLOOM 2027?
Friday, Feb. 19, 2027, at Indiana University South Bend, 1700 Mishawaka Ave. Check-in opens at 8:45 a.m.
Who can attend BLOOM?
High school students from northern Indiana, including Elkhart, South Bend, Mishawaka and Middlebury. Teachers, chaperones, IU students and community members can also register.
Does BLOOM cost anything?
No. BLOOM is free for everyone who attends, and lunch is included.
How do students register?
A teacher can register a group of students through Earth Charter Indiana, or students can register on their own. Both use the form on the registration page.
Do I need journalism experience?
No. The workshops assume no experience. Bring an environmental issue you’re curious about.
What time does the day start and end?
Check-in opens at 8:45 a.m. The program runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., followed by an optional interview hour until 5 p.m.
What should I bring?
Your registration confirmation email, a notebook, and an environmental issue or story idea you care about. Lunch is provided.
Does BLOOM provide transportation?
No. Please arrange a bus or other travel through your own school or organization.
What happens to student work after the conference?
Students whose pitches are selected at the story pitch session work with a YEPT mentor to finish their stories. Stories that are ready can be published on YEPT.org and in the 89 Percent Project print magazine.
Can IU students take part?
Yes. IU students can lead workshops, judge pitches, host lunch tables and mentor students after the conference.
Can organizations table at the conference?
Yes. Environmental and community organizations can table at the networking lunch. Email us to ask about tabling.
Is the venue accessible?
Yes. Every BLOOM room at IUSB is wheelchair accessible. For other accommodations, email us at least two weeks before the conference.
