For IU students
Volunteer or mentor at BLOOM
IU students lead workshops, judge pitches, host lunch tables and mentor high school students after the conference.
BLOOM relies on IU students to lead workshops, judge pitches and host lunch tables. Environmental science majors, journalism students and graduate researchers all have a role.
Roles
Four ways to help
Workshop leader
Lead or co-lead a 90-minute workshop in your field. Most workshop leaders are upper-division undergraduates, graduate students or recent alumni.
Pitch judge
Hear student story pitches at 3 p.m. and help choose which students get a mentor.
Lunch table host
Sit at a topic table during lunch and answer students’ questions about your studies and career plans.
Mentor
Work with a student whose pitch was selected and help turn it into a story YEPT.org can publish.
What you gain
What you get out of it
- Practice explaining your field to high school students.
- Teaching and mentoring experience for your résumé.
- Contacts with IU faculty and partner organizations such as Earth Charter Indiana.
- A hand in helping high school students publish environmental journalism.
